Mix
for a Cure
Sometime around 1920, the KitchenAid Stand Mixer found
its way into the American kitchen. Today, it holds a coveted
spot as the perennial workhorse in any serious kitchen.
Its design alone exudes strength and durability. Its construction
is simple and solida satisfyingly heavy beast. In
fact, this machine is so well put together that little
about it has changed since the industrial designer Egmont
Arens introduced its new look in the 1930s.
The
KitchenAid Stand Mixer is a versatile machine. It can
knead a hearty bread dough and then turn around and whip
a most sublime and delicate meringue. The KitchenAid is
reliable and does not disappoint. It will cream together
butter and sugar for hundreds of cakes and thousands of
cookies without ever looking tired. The attachments whisk,
fold, stir, mix, beat and blend as promised.
One
thing that has changed is color. No longer content with
plain old white, KitchenAid makes their stand mixers,
depending on model, in loud shades like tangerine, grape,
cranberry and crystal blue, or steely finishes of chrome,
nickel and satin copper. And now KitchenAid gives a very
good reason to buy pink. For every purchase of a pink
Limited Edition Artisan Series Stand Mixer, KitchenAid
will donate $50 to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation,
up to a total of $500,000. This is a 325-watt, 10-speed
model with 5-quart stainless steel bowl and three mixing
attachments.

| Foam Deluxe
Not
invented by a famous French chef nor an Italian coffee doctor,
but by an American couple visiting France. Steve and Lynn
Frankel figured there was a better way to get a PHP (perfect,
homogeneous, plump) foam for your cappuccino every time
without the hassle, noise and mishaps. After a few years
of development comes the Froth au Lait [PHP] foam maker.
Indeed very easy to use. Just pour in the milk, add any
flavoring you might fancy we tried it with Ovaltine
malt and three minutes later you are good to go.
Beyond
your coffee, you may lather the precious spume instead of
whipped cream over your apple pie or chocolate decadence
cake for less calories. You get a better foam because of
the unique, patented whip mechanism. With steamers, you
weigh down the foam. The unit is the size of a standard
water pitcher. Next step: a commercial version for restaurants,
etc. We say, don't steam it, froth it.
