Proteak Cutting Board
Utility Meets Sustainability
 |
At a time when the public is focused on the environment, some everyday products come to light that actually are sustainable. The Proteak cutting board is a unique kitchen item created from organically grown teak from over 7,000 acres of reclaimed ranch land along Mexico's Pacific coast. According to the company, their teak plantation captures the CO2 emitted by 15,000 cars, which is certainly important due to the sustainably grown forest's proximity to Mexico City.
Our first impression of this cutting board was that it certainly is attractive. The natural color variations in the wood are enhanced by a by a simple but useful design that allows juices to accumulate at one end of the board. After testing this cutting board with all the rigors of slicing a few rib eye steaks and the tough task of cutting beef ribs, we found it to be durable; it also cleaned up easily with a little soap and water. Overall, we think this is a product that demonstrates how sustainability and utility can go hand in hand.
Price: $23.99 for a 20 x 12 x 1/2-inch board
Proteak has also released a Carving Board with a Ceramic Cup Insert to collect all the juice from cutting a chicken or holiday turkey. The dimensions are 20 x 14 x 2.5 inches. Price: $160.
