Toffees by Valerie
Confections
by Laurie Hartzell
Toffee
is often associated with carnivals and apples, but this
toffee is on the other side of the world from the stuff
that gets stuck in your teeth. Valerie Confections in
Los
Angeles creates their crunchy, buttery, chocolate-covered
toffee squares by hand in small batches, and when you
bite into one of these babies, you can feel the love.
We
cannot say enough about these treats, which come in flavors
like almond, orange, mint, fleur de sel, ginger, classic,
hazelnut and ginaduja rocher (a mixture of hazelnut and
almond paste with toffee bits). They’re elegant
enough for any wedding yet homey enough for a night in
front of the television—so rich and sugary that,
oftentimes, one square is enough to satisfy any sweet
tooth. Novice foodies may balk at the price tag of these
sweets; at $7 for a two-piece box and $76 for a 24-piece
box, they’re not cheap. But believe us, these delicious
toffees are so, so worth it.
