The Thanksgiving Table

Recipes And Ideas to Create Your Own Holiday Tradition
by Diane Morgan

The Thanksgiving Table

Thanksgiving is the coziest of holidays, the favorite time of the year for many people. Gathering friends and family, savoring comfort foods, getting warm and snuggly together, sharing laughter and reminiscing…

A lot of people would never think to stray from the handed down recipes of their great grandmother for the holiday meal. There's a certain satisfaction in the ritual of making the same foods every year, the same rosemary turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans and pumpkin pies. Unless you're a professional chef, you might not want to experiment too much for this one. But you may want to update a few classics and throw in a mix of new variations. Or, you may not have a family recipe to fall back upon. You may have always been the guest and never the person in the kitchen.

Diana Morgan's handy book captures the Thanksgiving mood perfectly. She offers variations on the bird, all sorts of stuffing, an update on the—either dreaded or beloved—Jello salad, pumpkin cheesecake with gingersnap crumb crust, fennel and tomato gratin; all are very simple and doable. Other unique recipes include persimmon pudding and cranberry chutney. The latter makes a beautiful gift in a pint-size glass jar. Perfect to give to guests or to the person responsible for the Thanksgiving meal.
