The
Artful Chicken
Great Recipes & Splendid Objects for the Passionate
Collector
By Linda Arnaud (Stewart, Tabori & Chang)
 |

In
Linda Arnaud's foyer, treasured family photographs mingle with chicken
memorabilia. If that seems like an odd mix, it continues in her 175-page
book that's a blend of chicken recipes and chicken collectibles. A
dynamite Southern-fried chicken recipe, for instance, shares the book's
space with a photograph of a Greek vase circa 500 B.C., just about
the time the chicken arrived in the Western world. If you don't fly
the coop, it's a fascinating winged adventure from there through history
(covering everything from serious art to kitsch). Collector Arnaud
shows off her own treasures along with those from museums, antique
stores and gift stores. And she's no slouch in the kitchen, either.
As you gaze at a cover of a 1958 copy of Chicken Little, for
instance, you also can learn to make an outstanding Baked Basil & Pastis
(the caramel-colored, anise-flavored liqueur) Chicken. Scores of other
standouts, like Honey & Lavender Baked Chicken Legs, Focaccia-Breaded
Chicken Thighs with Mustard Sauce and Chili-Cinnamon Pan-Grilled Cutlets,
probably also will leave you clucking with approval.
